What is angioplasty and when is it done?

Angioplasty happens when bad cholesterol or blood clots accumulate in the arteries and blockage starts forming. Due to these blockages, the blood supply to the heart from the arteries reduces, due to which the risk of heart attack increases. This is the reason why people get angioplasty done in advance if they have problems like chest pain while lifting weight or climbing stairs. According to statistics, every year about 4.5 lakh heart patients undergo angioplasty in the country.

When is the time to get angioplasty done?

1. When there is more than 70% blockage in the blood vessels.

2. Started feeling short of breath just while walking.

3. If you feel severe chest pain

4. If chest hurts while climbing stairs or lifting weight

Whom to consult for what happens in Angioplasty?

Whether angioplasty is needed or not, advice should always be taken from an expert cardiologist. This process should be done under his supervision. In this process the blockage of vein and artery is opened. Angioplasty is done to save the life of the patient after heart attack or stroke.

In this, after giving an injection, a small tube is inserted through any blood vessel of the arm or leg. A catheter and wire are inserted through the tube and passed through the blockage. After opening this blockage with a balloon and creating a path, a stent is inserted there. So that blockage does not happen again at that place.

Leaving the stent there, the doctor takes out the catheter and wire. Angioplasty is considered successful up to 95%.

Precautions after angioplasty

1. If angioplasty has been done on the leg, then keep that area clean.

2. Contact a doctor if there is swelling or bleeding at that area due to excessive walking or running.

3. If bleeding inside the skin causes blue or red spots around it, it may take two weeks to heal, which can be done by applying ice.

4. If angioplasty is done by hand then it should not be left hanging down for a long time.

5. In case of severe pain in hand or elbow, one should consult a doctor.
